Key Points

  • Being on blood thinners does not automatically disqualify you from full mouth dental implants.
  • Full mouth implant surgery typically requires a medically supervised pause in blood thinners — coordinated between your prescribing doctor and your Nuvia provider.
  • Nuvia's clinical team reviews all medications as part of the evaluation process and works directly with your physician to ensure surgery is safe.

Patients that are on blood thinners may inaccurately assume they are disqualified from dental implant surgery. Coordination with the cardiologist or primary care provider is an important step to ensure a safe and successful surgery.

Here's what you need to know.

The Function of Blood Thinners

Blood has the ability to clot. When you get a cut, clotting is what stops the bleeding. Blood thinners — also called anticoagulants — slow that process down. They're prescribed to protect against stroke, heart attack, or dangerous blood clots.

Common ones include Eliquis® (apixaban), Xarelto® (rivaroxaban), Warfarin (Coumadin®), Pradaxa® (dabigatran), Plavix® (clopidogrel), and aspirin.

Full Mouth Implants Require Extra Planning

Bleeding is part of any surgery but the clotting process will be slower when you’re on blood thinners.

For a single tooth implant, the approach is straightforward. Providers may be able to proceed without pausing the medication at all. The procedure is smaller, and bleeding is easier to manage.

Full mouth dental implant surgery is different since it is a longer, more extensive procedure. In most cases, the blood thinner needs to be paused between two to seven days prior to surgery.

Our Nuvia providers will coordinate with the prescribing physician to ensure the blood thinner recommendations are followed to ensure your safety.

Medical and Dental Provider Collaboration

The clinical team at Nuvia reviews each patient's medications as part of the evaluation process. Blood thinners are one of the things we look at closely when determining candidacy.

A discussion between your physician and Nuvia provider to pause blood thinner medications is a required step to reduce the risk of a medical emergency.

Your cardiologist or prescribing doctor has to be part of the conversation. They determine how long you need to pause the medication before surgery, when it's safe to restart, and if any other modifications are necessary. This collaborative effort is standard practice at Nuvia to ensure your surgery is safe and successful.

Being on blood thinners does NOT automatically disqualify you from full mouth dental implants.

Careful consideration must be taken. For most patients, that is a medically supervised pause in the medication. Your prescribing doctor and Nuvia providers will collaborate and coordinate treatment together.
